Operations research to address unmet need for contraception in the Postpartum Period in Sylhet District, Bangladesh: The Healthy Fertility Study

Country: Bangladesh

Program: MSPH Program, Department of International Health, JHSPH

Project Abstract:
This is a trial to compare the relative effectiveness of two service delivery models: community-based maternal and newborn care integrated with postpartum family planning services and maternal and newborn care promotion only . Funded by USAID, this project is a partnership of Bangladesh Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), the Bangladeshi nongovernmental organization (NGO) Shimantik, ACCESS-FP, and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHU).

The specific objectives of this study are:
• Integrated Family Planning/Maternal Neonatal Health Intervention:To develop and test an integrated Family Planning and Maternal and Neonatal Health (FP/MNH) service delivery approach in Bangladesh rural settings, building on the FP/MNH service delivery system developed by the Projahnmo Study Group. Intervention activities include behavior change communications (BCC) on healthy timing and spacing of pregnancy and expansion of contraceptive options for postpartum women, including provision of oral contraceptive pills and condoms in the home by community health workers (CHW).
• Integrated Service Delivery Approach:To assess the strengths and limitations of integrating family planning into an ongoing community-based maternal and newborn care program.
• Intervention Impact: To assess the impact of the intervention package on exposure to key messages, knowledge of contraceptive methods and the benefits of healthy fertility practices, contraceptive prevalence and method mix at different points during the extended postpartum period, and on birth spacing.
