Global Health Established Field Placements:
How to Apply

***Please review carefully - changes were made January 12, 2012***

Program and Framework
The Global Health Established Field Placement (GHEFP) seeks to enhance the recruitment of students into global health research and practice careers by providing them the means to work with global health mentors on the mentor’s project and to attain an international cross-cultural and field experience. The GHEFP program is not intended for students requiring a student-initiated research project.

Hopkins-affiliate global health programs have prepared placements for students in their developing world programs. Students who wish to be considered for the GHEFP must apply for posted placements. Applications will be reviewed by the program staff, and finalists will be interviewed. Students who are selected for placement and agree to participate will be awarded a grant of $3,500 by the Center for Global Health.

Students selected to participate and receive a grant will be required to assist at the overseas site for the posted period. The placement site will not be required to pay the student or contribute financially to their transportation, subsistence, or other costs of living in-country -- that is what the grant from the Center for Global Health is meant to cover. The placement site, however, will be required to provide supervision of the student and offer assistance in locating suitable housing and general advice about living in-country.

Eligibility
GHEFP is open to all full-time students of the Johns Hopkins University who will return the following year to complete their academic programs. Additional limitations may aaply (e.g. graduate students only) and are provided in the descriptions. First-year medical students may apply only for placements designated for medical students. First-year medical students will need to apply for funding though the School of Medicine Dean for Student Affairs. Students who would be completing their studies prior to their projected travel date are not eligible to apply.

Other Requirements
Students selected for this placement will be expected to:

  • carry health insurance for the period of their time overseas.
  • obtain all appropriate vaccinations and other health requirements before departure to the field.
  • present on their experience at Global Health Day during the academic year following the completion of the project.
  • submit a summary of their work, a personal reflection statement, and 5 hi-res photos no later than 1 month after returning to Hopkins.
  • agree to allow CGH the rights to publish said photographs along with appropriate photo credit attribution.

Notices

  • The process for the GHEFP is competitive so students are not guaranteed placement.
  • Selection of awardees from the applicants will be made primarily by the project “hosts”. Because the student ‘s contribution will affect the work of the project, the “host” will need to make their decision based upon who they feel will serve them best, not necessarily the preference of the applicants.  As a result, it is possible that the “hosts” may choose not to accept any applicants, although this is not likely.
  • Applicants are also advised that, depending upon the placement, the $3,500 award from the Center for Global Health may not cover the entire cost of their travel and subsistence.  In these instances the student will be required to use their own resources to meet their costs.
