Mad cow disease on the wane worldwide

The report is from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) which reported a decrease in cases of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) by 50% per year for the last three years. Thus, cases in 2005 totaled 474 in the world compared to 878 in 2004 and 1646 in 2003. The zenith was “several tens of thousands in 1992”. There have also been a declining number of human cases of vCJD. The data for BSE for the world and cases of vCJD are summarized in the following table:
