Literature Review

BSE, bovine-USA:  Atypical Strain
Go to full text online: ProMED-AHEAD Digest 2006;180:5

The report quotes a USDA spokesman who noted that two domestic-born cattle in the U.S. have a rare strain of BSE that has been found in a small number of European cases. At an international conference on prion diseases in June 2006, there were reports from France and Italy that this disease was detected in a small number of cattle ranging from 5-15 years of age. It differs from the usual BSE in that the incubation period is longer so that older cattle are affected. It also shows differences in laboratory tests. However, caution was advised in suggesting that this is a new strain of BSE until there are more supporting data.
