My research is focused on advancing perinatal and neonatal health and survival in developing countries. Broad-based training in pediatrics, infectious diseases, dermatology and public health has stimulated a diverse research program. Particular areas of interest include prevention, recognition and management of neonatal infections; development of neonatal IMCI; mechanisms of skin infections, including the skin as a portal of entry for invasive infections; augmentation of skin barrier function to prevent infections in preterm infants; and community-based approaches to improving household and community neonatal health
