Research and Professional Experience
Stefan Baral is a physician epidemiologist who is a member of the faculty in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Stefan completed his undergraduate education at McGill University, followed by graduate training in gene therapeutics and vaccine development at McMaster University, and medical education at Queen's University. He received certification by the Canadian Coucil of Family Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with training at the University of Toronto in Family Medicine and Public Health Medicine, respectively.
Stefan has been involved with a series of global initiatives focused on HIV among key populations with the goal of being part of a team that rewrites the narrative of the epidemiology of HIV worldwide. HE has led projects with with the World Bank, amfAR MSM Initiative, Global Fund, UNDP, and UNFPA. Stefan has led data collection characterizing HIV epidemiology and associated risk factors for key populations in numerous countries in Southern, Eastern, and Western Africa including Malawi, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, Lesotho, Zambia, Guinea-Bissau, Swaziland, The Gambia, Zimbabwe as well as in parts of Asia. Stefan is also leading HIV Prevention projects funded by NIH, USAID, and others for key populations in several settings including Malawi, South Africa, Kenya, Senegal, and Nigeria. Stefan acts as Associate Director for key populations of the Center for Public Health and Human Rights.
