Research and Professional Experience

My primary research focus is the epidemiology of tuberculosis, primarily in the context of HIV infection. I currently lead a large community randomized trial in Brazil investigating isoniazid preventive therapy for HIV-infected patients as part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded CREATE consortium. I also conduct research in South Africa, working on several HIV-related studies at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. A strong interest is the association between smoking and TB and smoking and HIV. I am conducting studies in South Korea, Brazil, South Africa, Pakistan and the Republic of Georgia on smoking and TB, and recently began a smoking cessation trial in South Africa for HIV-infected patients. Another area of interest is diabetes and TB and we will soon be starting an NIH sponsored prospective cohort study investigating differences in TB outcomes between TB patients with and without TB.

Since 2005, I have been the primary instructor for the Epidemiologic Basis for Tuberculosis Control, a class developed by Dr. George W. Comstock. This course is conducted twice-yearly, both in class and online as part of the distance education program at Johns Hopkins University. I have also developed a one-year training course for Brazilian and South African clinicians and epidemiologists emphasizing methods in developing, implementing and analyzing epidemiologic studies. This course concentrates on HIV/TB population research, and has now expanded through another training grant to include trainees from these countries interested in HIV-related malignancies.
