Research and Professional Experience

Neurological complications continue to be an important cause of morbidity among HIV+ individuals. Dr. Sacktor's research focuses primarily on the cognitive manifestations of HIV infection. These investigations include clinical, epidemiological, and neuroimaging studies as well as trials of therapeutic agents for the treatment of HIV dementia.

With respect to international studies, Dr. Sacktor has developed and validated a screening tool for identifying HIV+ individuals at risk for HIV dementia, the International HIV Dementia Scale. Dr. Sacktor has focused his international studies of HIV dementia in Uganda. In collaboration with with the Academic Alliance Foundation, he has conducted studies evaluating the prevalence of HIV dementia in Kampala, Uganda, risk factors for cognitive impairment, and the effect of antiretroviral therapy on cognitve performance in HIV+ individuals with cognitive impairment. Dr. Sacktor is currently PI of a study evaluating the efficacy of minocycline for the treatment of HIV associated cognitive impairment in Uganda. Dr. Sacktor is also the PI of an R21 evaluating the epidemiology of HIV associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) and sensory neuropathy in Uganda funded by NIMH.
