Background[1]

Located in Western Africa along the Gulf of Guinea, the Federal Republic of Nigeria was under British control throughout the 19th century. Independence came in 1960 following World War II and is currently experiencing its longest period of civilian rule. As a petroleum-based economy, ethnic, religious, and environmental issues persist including pollution, rapid urbanization, inequitable incomes, and deforestation.
