India

Data

Background[1]

Located in Southern Asia along the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the Republic of India dates back to one of the oldest civilizations of the world, the Indus Valley. The country was invaded first by Arabs, then the Turkish, and finally the British colonized them by the 19th century. Independence in 1947 brought about a division and dispute between India and Pakistan lasting until 1971. The country has significant economic wealth and output, but faces such issues as overpopulation, environmental degradation, poverty, and both ethnic and religious strife.
