Background[1]

Located in Western South America along the Pacific Ocean at the equator, the Republic of Ecuador was first part of the Inca Empire until the Spanish invaded in 1533. The territory divided over time into independent countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, and Quito. However, Ecuador continued to lose territory through the 20th century with due to periods of political instability, border wars, and government protests. The country is home to Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world and subject to earthquakes, landslides, floods, and droughts.
