Colombia

Data

Background[1]

Located in Northern South America along the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean, the Republic of Colombia emerged in 1830 after the collapse of Gran Colombia. A 40 year conflict followed due to corruption in the government, illegal parliamentary groups, and the drug trade. Since 2002, the violence has slowly dissipated but neighboring countries fear it spilling over their borders. With highlands subject to volvanic eruptions, earthquakes, and droughts, Colombia is also dealing with the excessive use of pesticides in the soil and water, air pollution and deforestation.
