Switzerland

Data

Background[1]

Located in Central Europe, the Swiss Confederation was founded in 1291 as a defensive alliance until it declared its independence from the Holy Roman Empire in 1499. Switzerland's sovereignty and neutrality contributed to its honored lack of involvement in the World Wars and its strengthened ties with neighbors throughout Europe. The landlocked country has the highest elevations in the Alps and is subject to avalantions, landslides, and flash foods; it deals with such issues as air and water pollution.
