Austria

Data

Background[1]

Located in Central Europe, the Republic of Austria was once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire until its defeat in World War I. By 1955, a State Treaty recognized the country's independence and forbade unification with Germany. By 1999, it entered the EU Economic Monetary Union. Austria mainly deals with such environmental issues as forest degradation and air pollution which contributes to poor soil and use of chemicals.
