Framework Program in Global Health: FAQs
Program: Johns Hopkins has established a program to support fellowships for short-term research experience abroad to address global health issues. The objective is to enhance the recruitment of diverse students into research and practice careers in global health. The program is supported by the National Institutes of Health’s Fogarty International Center and the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health.

Eligibility: All JHU undergraduate and graduate students, including (but not limited to) students in Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, and International Studies are eligible to apply. Additionally, medical graduates in residency programs are eligible to apply. Students who will be completing their studies prior to their travel/research are not eligible to apply; you must be a returning student. DOCTORAL STUDENTS CANNOT APPLY FOR SUPPORT DIRECTLY RELATED TO THEIR DISSERTATION RESEARCH.

Post Research Requirements: Upon return from the research experience, Frameworks recipients are required to submit a 20 page report, a brief summary of their Frameworks experience, and do a 30 minute presentation as part of the Frameworks in Global Health Lecture Series.

Publications: As of April 7, 2008, all articles arising from NIH funds must be submitted to PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication.  Since Framework fellowships are partially funded by the NIH (The Fogarty International Center, FIC) any articles you publish based on your Framework experience must be submitted to PubMed. To facilitate your compliance please do the following:

(1).  Site the Fogarty International Center in your paper.  You can use this (or similar) language: "This study was partially supported by grant number 5R25TW007506 from the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health."
(2).
Submit to the Center for Global Health a copy of any accepted paper in electronic format.  We will handle submission to PubMed.

Application Deadline: November 15 and April 1, annually. Note: These dates have recently been updated. Consistent with NIH policy, when deadlines fall on a weekend or holiday, applications will be due the next workday following the deadline.

Details: Students must identify a faculty advisor willing to support their application and provide mentoring. Typically, the student will work at an international site where the faculty advisor has on-going research activities. Twenty-four students per year will be selected to participate in hands-on research in developing countries or with key institutions engaged in global health research and practice. PhD research will not be supported through the program. The program includes $3,000 for undergraduate students and $5,000 for graduate students to support travel and field research for up to three months.
