Adnan Hyder Uganda Bloomberg School of Public Health, PhD program In low-income settings where accurate health data is scarce, demographic surveillance systems (DSS) are used to monitor population-level changes in demographics and health. In Uganda, the burden of injury and disability is under-reported and under-studied. Consequently, resources are not being adequately allocated to the prevention and reduction of injuries and disability. DSSs are an ideal tool to assess the burden of injury and disability because data on every individual’s health status in a population is collected three times per year. The overall goal of the proposed research is to assess the burden of ill-health at a DSS site in the Iganga/Mayuge districts in Uganda and to formulate new approaches to measure injury and disability burden. Findings from the disability assessment will inform district and national health priorities in Uganda and can be applied to the 45 other DSS sites throughout the world to assess the burden of injury and disability. >> See all Spring 2007 Framework Award winners |
