HIV/AIDS and Adolescent Girls Engaging in Sexual Activity with Minibus Drivers in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Fall 2007

Amy GohJHU advisor: Phyllis Sharps

Country: South Africa

Program: School of Nursing, Bachelor's program

Project Abstract:
The province of KwaZulu-Natal currently has the highest rate of HIV prevalence in South Africa.  A recently indicated high-risk group of HIV contraction in South Africa is that of minibus taxi drivers.  Though studies are currently being undertaken on HIV/AIDS and the minibus taxi industry in KwaZulu-Natal, little research has been done on the partners of the minibus taxi drivers, many of whom are adolescent girls.  As a demographic group with a high prevalence rate of HIV in South Africa, it will be important to undertake a study to investigate the adolescent partners of minibus taxi drivers in KwaZulu-Natal and their vulnerability to HIV.
