Characterizing the pathogens that cause febrile illnesses in HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients care in Rakai Health Sciences Program's (RHSP) clinics in Uganda
Fall 2006

JHU advisor: Lisa Mills
Country: Uganda
Program: School of Medicine, Internal Medicine Resident

Project Abstract:
We are requesting an amendment to the Rakai Community Cohort Study and its linked ARV-related clinical study to allow for the collection of questionnaire data and testing of blood from both HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients who present with fever to the Rakai Health Sciences Program’s (RHSP) clinics. We will draw bacterial and mycobacterial blood cultures, perform malaria thick and thin smears, rapid malaria diagnostic testing, and serum cryptococcal antigen assays (on at-risk HIV-positive patients only) on these blood samples. Our primary goal is to characterize the pathogens which cause febrile illnesses in HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients cared for in RHSP’s clinics.
