There is growing worldwide acceptance and promotion of emergency contraception (EC) as a measure to reduce unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions, and Ghana is one of the developing countries interested in expanding access to EC. The overarching goal of the proposed project is to increase awareness of and access to EC in Ghana, with the immediate objective of assessing its acceptability by clients and providers in post-abortion care (PAC) clinics. The study proposes to evaluate the effect of advance provision of EC to PAC clients, sitting the intervention at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana. Phases I (pre-intervention survey) and III (post-intervention survey) of the study consist of quantitative and qualitative interviews with randomly selected consenting providers, clients, and spouses/partners. Phase II is a randomized clinical trial which will evaluate the effect of advance provision of EC and compare it with a control group, i.e., PAC clients receiving standard care as part of the post-abortion counseling protocol. I will conduct interviews during Phase I, as well as baseline interviews with randomized PAC clients during part of Phase II. I will participate in the analysis of data collected in Phase I examining providers’ perceptions of and attitudes toward EC in the PAC clinic at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana.
