Topic: Finding the Balance Between Western and Traditional Tibetan Medicine

Summary:
Tibetan (Mahayana) Buddhism, with its focus on integrated physical, mental, and spiritual health, represents one of the world’s oldest continuing medical practice systems.  Tibetan medicine focuses on disease management through spiritual practice and herbal remedies.  Western medicine focuses on objective diagnosis and research-validated treatment.  Historically it has been difficult to integrate or balance these approaches.  Dr. Sadutshang is schooled in both practices and brings a global perspective to his lectures.

Biography:
Dr. Tsetan Sadutshang , Personal Physician to His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, has been trained in both the "Eastern and Western Medical traditions". He attended Medical School at the Jawaharlal Institute in Pondicherry, India. He received a degree in Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis at the University of Wales in Cardiff, a degree in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and an MPH at Harvard University in Boston.  Dr. Sadutshang is currently a member of the Indian Medical Association; Board Member of the Central Council of Tibetan Medicine; and Chief Executive Officer and Administrator, as well as Head of Clinical Medicine at the Tibetan Delek Hospital in Dharamsala India.
